Naidera, the Water Dragon
Naidera, the Water Dragon
Naidera was sculpted from English Porcelain clay in my studio, slowly dried over the course of 2-3 months under plastic and bisque fired to 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit in the kiln. The bisqued sculpture was finished with a myriad of celadon glazes before being fired a second time. The sculpture is set in a foundation of pigmented resin for stability.
This one-of-a-kind piece measures approximately 18"x18"x18".
Naidera’s Story
Naidera is a Water Dragon whose name is based on the Greek Mythology word “Naiad” meaning “water nymph”. Naidera is not a creature of flame and fury, but of stillness and deep knowing. Beneath the shifting veil of moonlight, she emerges from a long-forgotten drowned temple in the depths of the sea. Fisherman speak of seeing her great horned head rise above the sea surface, crowned in coral, her eyes older than memory. Villagers leave offerings on the riverbank- shells and other tokens of adoration, and pray to Naidera, that she will bring their families protection and prosperity. To know Naidera is to respect the balance of all living things. She is the pulse beneath the surface, the breath between the waves.
